Companies that do not have Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, or social marketing plans of any kind may find themselves in the dust when it comes to their competition. Social media is more than just watching silly cat videos and being a Twit head. There are businesses that build their entirely on the use of social media marketing. These companies are making 6 figures plus per quarter just because they took the plunge and decided to give web 2.0 a try.
New media is a term heard constantly on every second new storey your read, but what does this buzz word mean? New media is essentially an entirely new way to gather information. The internet is more accessible than ever before making it more popular than print media, more popular than radio, and even more popular than TV. Ask yourself how many days has it been since I got an e-mail with a news article or when was the last time I checked out a quick video online. Chances are you came to this page because someone referred to it, once more you probably just finished watching a stupid video clip one of your family members or friends just forwarded to you.
The businesses that are staying ahead of the curve are utilizing this hugs market, and it is saturated, you are bombarded with ads, pop-ups, pop-unders, splash screens anything and everything possible to get our attention, why? Because even though we are being bombarded by commercialism we are still buying the products, and if we didn't see them on a pop up, get forwarded that e-mail, or saw them in a pre-roll of our favorite video, then we never would have known about that product.
It gets better, if you take the time to start a community on Facebook, get followers on twitter, and start a youtube account you gain yourself a captive audience. If there is quality content that keeps them coming back for more they will continue to buy whatever it is you are selling, why? Because people are creatures of habit, if they see something they want it and if they trust you then they will keep buying from you. Apple is a great example of this technique, every year release a new product but add something little like a camera or a slightly faster CPU, or slightly better design and people are flogging the last generation on ebay for the new one, faster than you can say mindless consumerism.
